We offer Packard Woodturning Tools in three different types of steel:
M2 high speed steel - holds an edge five times longer than traditional high carbon steel. M2 tools come fitted with a European Ash handle.
ASP 2030 high speed steel - a powder metal that holds an edge up to three times longer than M2 high speed steel. 2030 tools come fitted with a stained Beech handle.
ASP 2060 high speed steel -a powder metal that holds an edge up to four and one half times longer than M2 high speed steel. 2060 tools come fitted with a plantation grown Rosewood handle.
Packard tools are made to our strict specifications in Sheffield England by Hamlet Craft Tools. We make sure that every Packard Tool is tested for proper hardness so it will perform at its best! The M2 tools are hardened to between 62-64 HRC while the ASP 2030 and ASP 2060 tools are hardened to between 65-67 HRC. The ASP 2030 and ASP 2060 woodturning tools use steel made with the Asea Stora Process (ASP), a powder metalurgy process which enables the steel to have a higher vanadium content for longer edge holding ability, yet, still be easy to sharpen. This translates into a superior tool, containing steel with a uniform hardness that holds its edge, "...far longer than conventional M2 HSS tools" (Woodturning Magazine).
