Bob Stocksdale began turning bowls in the 1940's and was a master at finding the natural beauty in wood. This talent combined with his gifted use of simple tools and simple shapes became a trademark of his work. He has pieces in Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 1987 the author spent a week in Bob's home workshop to hear him describe his life and work. Included are Pictures of 50 original pieces, step by step instructions on how to turn a bowl and platter plus letters and newspaper excerpts from the 1950's. The text is transcribed directly from audio tapes he made and added to never before seen photos to create this snapshot of an American original.
